Ephesians 6:18-19
"Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should."
THE PURPOSE OF PRAYER
Why We Pray
People in all magnificence and wonder, (created by God in his image) has an internal need to connect and have a relationship of a higher authority. Regardless of what some may perceive, there is an authority whom people connect with; it's just to "what" authority? Our relationship is with our loving Father God, creator of heaven and earth, the alpha and omega; the Omni benevolent. We pray that each and every one finds God's grace whether by intercession or direct revelation. This is an avenue in which we, the children of God, pray for through the works of the Heavenly Father. When life matters become too real, too hard, too hopeless, through the turbulent fog and no sense of direction, inspiration and connection may seem too far away or not to exist at all. Prayer involves the recognition and acceptance of a God beyond our own intelligence and with whom we can have a relationship. God provides His presence of inspiration, joy, security, peace of mind, and guidance that goes beyond what is possible in the absence of the conviction that such a power exists.
About Prayer
. . . one of His disciples said to Him, ’Lord, teach us to pray . . .’ —Luke 11:1
Prayer is the way that the life of God in us is nourished. We may look upon prayer simply as a means of getting things for ourselves, but the biblical purpose of prayer is that we may get to know God Himself; to have a relationship with our Father.
Prayer is a request and not a demand made upon God. We can say that we can boldly declare his promises in scripture; but we must also approach our Father’s throne with sincere reverence, respect, humbleness, and Praise and thanksgiving. We may pray for healing of body; but God may allow our sickness of body to get our attention and keep it focused as a means of learning and growing.
Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. Matthew 18:20 (KJV)
“Ask, and you will receive . . .” (John 16:24). A child exhibits a magnificent boldness to ask! Our Lord said, “. . . unless you . . . become as little children . . .” (Matthew 18:3). Ask and God will do.
Give Jesus Christ the opportunity and the room to work. When you feel all else has failed, this is a moment we get in touch with the truth and the reality of God Himself. Be yourself before God and present Him with your concerns— When you think you are self-sufficient, you do not leave room for God to work.
Prayer changes things, God has established things so that prayer, on the basis of redemption, changes the way a person looks at things. Prayer is not a matter of changing things externally, but one of working miracles in a person’s inner nature.
