Holy Name
Jesus Christ
Meaning “God Saves”
Philippians 2:9
Because of this, God greatly exalted him, and bestowed on him the Name is above every name; that at the name of Jesus, very knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the Earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father.
Holiness of His Name
The second of three persons of the Divine Trinity; we embrace the Name of Jesus, God Son, and all of His Glory. What a powerful force the name Jesus carries; for every blessing and grace for time and eternity. “Ask in Jesus Name” is related to approximately 72 bible verses in the Holy Bible. The holiness of his name brings help, provides need, security, healing, and peace. For Christ has said: "If you ask the Father anything in my name, He will give it you." (John 16:23). It gives consolation in spiritual trials. The Name of Jesus reminds the sinners of His love, conviction, and our contrition. We kneel in pain and sadness when acknowledging the Lamb of God’s suffering and death. Yet, we exalt His name of His glorious resurrection. The name protects us against Satan and his wiles, for the devil fears the Name of Jesus, who has conquered him on the Cross. In our prayers, praise and thanksgiving we conclude with: “In the name of Jesus, or Through Our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It’s interesting and fascinating to know that the name of Jesus (or reference to) is written approximately 983 - 1281 times in the Holy Bible (depending on various bible interpretations); for me, the magnificence of just the mention of his name: “Jesus” gives homage and honor. The sacredness of Jesus’ name has reverence, magnificence and honor and has manifested in glorious blessings throughout the ages; the prophecy of His coming, His life, His teachings, His sacrifice, His resurrection, His return and His everlasting presence. Let us worship and honor his name by examining some of the names presented with each true benevolent meaning.
In the beginning before all creation, Jesus was called:
“The Word” – John 1:1-2
In the beginning was the Word
And the Word was with God
And the Word was God
He was the beginning with God
(Evidence: Genesis 1:26 The Creation of Man “Let us make man in “our” own image.”)
The Coming of our Savior
It was foretold by the prophets in the Old Testament, the coming of our Savior – to the Israelites’ anticipation for freedom from dominant ruler(s) of its time; new kingdom rule, royalty.
Shepherd - (Micah 5:2) But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.
Emmanuel - (Isaiah 7:14) All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Emmanuel (which means 'God is with us').
Prince of Peace - (Isaiah 9:6) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Celebration of his Birth
The blessed birth of Jesus Christ as told in the Old Testament came into fruition in three of the four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Luke and John); born of the virgin Mary, as always holy, Jesus was nurtured and raised as a child, thus, became man; the light and savior of the world. Humility of the flesh, God in human form; born not in majestic surroundings, but of humble surroundings - a baby in the manger.
Jesus - (Luke 1:29-33) But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
Immanuel - (Matthew 1:23) “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
Lord - (John 1:41-44) When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42And she cried out with a loud voice and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me? 44For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy.
Begotten Son - (John 1:1) and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Royal Bloodline
Son of David - (Matthew 21:8-10) 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Divine
God the Son (Matthew 3:13-17) Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
Son of the Living God (Matthew 16:13-20) 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Christ, the Messiah -
The Anointed One
The Anointed - (Acts10:37-38 NIV) 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
The Light - (John 1:1-5,14 ESV) In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Way, Truth, Life - (John 14:6) 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
His Relationship with Us
Jesus, our Heavenly Father right here on earth, eating, breathing, talking, living; yet in all great holiness and sacredness; what a privilege to have been able to walk with him and to have an earthly relationship. Today, we have a stronger faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ because of our worship, his teaching through the living word, we acknowledge who He is; how we love and adore him. (John 20:29 NIV) Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
Brother - (Mark 3:35) - For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Friend - (John 15:15) - Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his Lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
Good Shepherd - (John 10: 14-18) 14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me-- 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."
Good Son In view of the scriptures below, Jesus honors the authority of His Father through complete obedience; and his Father’s delight for His son. All that Jesus did and said was exactly what His Father wanted Him to do and say. His entire life and ministry were orchestrated by His Father and was careful to carry out every detail according to the will of His Father. Even in the midst of persecution, Jesus obeys his Father:
(Hebrews 10:7 7) “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’”
(Matthew 17:5) While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
(John 12:49) “For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak.”
(Luke 22:42) 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
Healer - ( Matthew 15:30-31) 30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: 31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
High Priest - (Hebrews 4:14) Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.…
Mediator
(1st Timothy 2:5) For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,
(John 2:1) (NIV) My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
Teacher - (John 7:14-18) 14 Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. 15 The Jews were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having studied?" 16 Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. 17 If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.
The Accused
Jesus was sent for a purpose by his Father. It was God’s will and purpose, to save humanity from the grasp of Satan; to save man from eternal destruction. As the first Adam, fell from grace in the beginning, so Jesus (the Last Adam) must sacrifice himself to regain grace for man; there had to be an exchange. Jesus, our Savior knew his mission, and obeyed his Father. Because of his love for us, Jesus, the Blameless, laid down his life so that we, the sinners, may have eternal life. It was not for the reason the Israelites awaited for in the deliverance and freedom from government rule and oppression, but for the freedom from spiritual captivity.
Blameless -(Psalms 15:2-3) (NIV) The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart; whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others.
Lamb of God - (John 1:29) The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world
Suffering Servant - (53:8) “He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.…”
King of Israel
King of the Jews
First announced by the wise men (i.e. Magi) bearing gifts at his Jesus birth;
(Matthew 2:2) Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
But later addressed and mocked in three instances during persecution and crucifixion: “King of the Jews”.
(Matthews 27:37) And they set up over his head his accusation written, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS
But Praise God, His name is declared as Truth.
Great Redeemer
The price that Jesus Christ, the Living Redeemer, paid for the deliverance from our sin was his life. He died upon the cross for our sins so that he may redeem us, deliver us, and save us; for sin separates us from God. Thanks be to God for his greatest gift, Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.
Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Romans 3:23-24 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
I Peter 1:18-19 says, “Forasmuch as you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things as silver and gold, form your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish, and without spot.”
Bread of Life - (John 6:51) 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
The Risen John 11:25-26 (NIV) 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Savior of the World - (John 4:42) 42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
His Greatness
The Church (Ephesians 2:19-22) 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
Judge (John 5:24-30) 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. 28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
The Great
“I AM”(John 8:58) Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

Conquering Lord - (Revelation 3:21) `He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
I glorify Jesus Christ, because he first loved me, before I was in my mother’s womb, he knew me. We were blessed before I knew he ever existed…I praise God, and thank God for sending his Precious Lord Jesus Christ. He loves me even with my faults, but He is my true counsel, brother and deliverance.
“Oh, how I love Jesus, Oh how I love Jesus, Oh, how I love Jesus…because he first loved me!”
Philippians 2:9 Because of this, God greatly exalted him, and bestowed on him the Name is above every name; that at the name of Jesus, very knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the Earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father.
